It depends on the run itself. Most of the runs today do require everyone to wear a PFD. It can be an auto inflatable all the way up to a Lifeline. Some of the runs you will even see people wearing the old school orange emergency jackets. They dont really care just as long as you have them on. During the runs themselves they expect them to stay on while under power/on plain. But after the run it up to you.
They will tell you before the run in the registration information if you will be required to were them or not.
