I know what you mean, however I was suprised how well my Avalanche towed up those big mountain passes. If I got a good start uphill I usually dropped one gear and jumped 1000 rpm.
I still got 11 to 12 mpg through the mountains.

Mine pulled the mountains good, It was just a lot of work making sure the transmission didn't do 100 shifts up the hill. In hind sight, I probably should have put it is second gear, and climbed it that way. The Mountain went from 900 feet to 2900 feet in about 5 or 6 miles. Its the only time I have ever seen my water Temp gauge move, and it went from around 200 to 235. Don't have a trans temp gauge, but I'm sure it was hot.

Zone 5,
Don't you have the tow haul feature?
I use it all of the time. Chevy reccomends it as well.
It holds your gears on starts & while pulling a grade.
Like I said earlier, I pulled the smokey mountains and only dropped 1 gear which added 1000rpm. I ran between 75 and 85 mph the whole time. In fact whenever some jerk pulled out in front of me and slowed me way down, I needed to drop 2 gears but I was able to regain my original speeds rather quickly.

Yup, has the tow haul. I always use it. It dropped 1 gear, and then I was trying to keep it there. Every oncce in a while it would drop again and hit around 5000 RPM, which I didn't want, so I backed off, which probably didn't help. Even counting that mountain, we got just shy of 14 mpg towing, and 19 empth.

1999 Chevy 1-ton dually 4x4, 454, crew cab with a short bed. We added a 50 gallon fuel cell in the bed to increase our range.

Sorry, couldn't find a good picture of just the truck. Guess I need to take some.
