Thanks , one thing i noticed 2 years ago when i shot this show was the lens seemed to hunt for focus.

You must have been using AF-S mode. If you happened to focus on the blue sky, it won't AF, will hunt, and not take the exposure. With AF-C, it will still take the exposure even if it can't AF, and you end up with a blurry photo. It
takes practice, but try to put that center focus point on a contrasting area
of your subject before pressing the shutter release.

What lens are you using?

No, static means it uses the focus point you select. continuous is AF-C.

ok i got the AF-C and the center point but still not sure after reading the guide for the camera how to set static. could they call it something else on the d-90. Thanks for the help, heres a link to the shots i did 2 years ago at this same airshow, i hope to do a better job this year.

I miss understood your air show photos. I thought you were taking plane shots with them flying, and in this case, you need AF-C. If the planes are on the ground, and not moving, AF-S would work just fine. I was wrong in using the word static, I'll get the right terminology for you.

Hi Mike, from the D90 owner's manual, the correct terminology is "single point":
