Turbine Outage

Only been apart twice in my 20 years here and never once an oil change. Pretty cool since it rarely has shut down for more than an hour or two per year.

AMBUSHER 03-03-2012 08:39 PM

That is a huge turbine, WOW.

mj2562 03-04-2012 07:48 AM

Nice! I'm in the hoist and crane service industry and involved with all of the Duke Energy outages. Every time I see these pics it makes you realize how many parts are in these turbines. I have some pics of a outage where I modernized a 175 ton bridge crane, I'll see if I can find some.

MMarsha 03-04-2012 08:37 AM

Why'd it break?

sonicss31 03-04-2012 09:16 AM

Not broken, open for inspection and control upgrades.

Skill Saw 30 03-04-2012 10:04 AM

Yaga, as in the witch-like character from russian folklore?

I think BoatMe has a few ex's that may fit the bill?

mj2562 03-04-2012 06:11 PM

Spell check moderator! Dayum it. Russian? Like hurry to get it done?

rschap1 03-05-2012 08:31 AM

COOL
The "steam ring" sections get machined here where I work.
Amazing technology goes into the shape of the blades and vanes.
Design that creates a fraction of percent increase in efficiency gets a BIG payoff when used for so many years.

CKW 03-06-2012 09:48 PM

Amazing what 5M would buy back 20 years ago.

What is the replacement cost on that thing in todays dollars?

Lighting Bolt 04-08-2012 12:50 AM

MJ2562 You ever come to Oconee for our outages?

mj2562 04-08-2012 06:23 AM

No but I have done Kiowee outage for the backup hydro station that's on the same site. You have some work coming up over there?

Lighting Bolt 04-09-2012 01:00 AM

Nothing other than the Unit 3 refueling outage. I dont know when Keowee has another scheduled outage. Think they just had a big ne a few months ago if im not mistaken.

mj2562 04-12-2012 06:58 AM

I have 3 outages going on right now and only have 4 techs! 107 hrs two weeks ago and 55 hrs by thursday last week. I think it calmed down this week only had one breakdown call yesterday afternoon.

NICE paycheck there!!

I worked 7, 20 hour days for a 140 hour week when a tornado hit my town 10 years ago. I just did the math and if I had that kind of loot rolling in for one week in todays money I would be just below a Dentist paycheck!

Yes but it took me a few days to recharge my battery's. I hear ya on the Dentis t paycheck!

Lighting Bolt 04-13-2012 02:57 PM

Yea the NRC makes sure we dont get those kinda hours anymore. We are limited to a 54hr rolling average. How the hell they came up with 54hrs when we work 12hr days is beyond me. lol

mj2562 04-13-2012 06:39 PM

I'll stick to Fossil fuel and hydro respectfully. They have 16 hr max unless........ lol but Its heading are way also. When you have a wound rotor motor fail on the critical path outage crane you do what you got to do.

Some pics of rebuilding waterwalls and ram table during annual outage. It's not a glamorous job but it pays the bills. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...f6994ddc1b.jpg old cut out waterwall sections. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...9a589d32e4.jpg Where the wall once was. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...868b1cc631.jpg Ram table being replaced. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...b9a57471bc.jpg Reciprocating grates in the furnace. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...328d01f865.jpg Upper header where I had to fit my fat ass for inspections.

Nuclear? How many MW? My company used to own Maine Yankee 860 MW nuclear. Because of the cost to repair cracked steam tubes and constant pubic opposition it's now a gravel field with storage silos for the spent fuel and armed guards.

sonicss31 05-23-2016 06:35 PM

Time for a new cooling water pump. Capacity around 23k per minute. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e3cc05849f.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...316e4e3fe3.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...07fdfe482c.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...6420e4f053.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...eebef3a9af.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...2d97c13baf.jpg

When you stated 23K per min, did you mean 23,000 gallons/min?

sonicss31 05-24-2016 03:45 AM

Yes

CKW 05-25-2016 08:46 PM

Sonicss31,
Do you have to do any field welding, to make things fit?
To state it another way, do you have the people in the field, to make it work?
It's easy to drop a bolt through a flange, .....................
I know with BIM/AutoCAD, you shouldn't, but I also know we don't live in a perfect world.
Looking at the welds at the reducer, on that SS..........it was machine made.

Hey Charlie did you ever hear of The 2009 Sayano–Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station accident? The only reason I knew about it was it spiked the price of aluminum, this power plant supplied electricity to a huge aluminum mill in Russia

Never saw that one. That's why they pay me the big bucks. Something bad happens to our turbine I'll be at your place shoveling horse chit for rent money. Lol
